The American Board of Family Practice (ABFP) is the second largest medical specialty board in the
United States. Founded in 1969, it is a voluntary, not-for-profit, private organization whose purposes
include:
improvement of the quality of medical care available to the public;
establishment and maintenance of high standards of excellence in the specialty of Family Practice;
improvement of the standards of medical education and facilities for training in the specialty;
determination by examination the fitness of specialists in Family Practice who shall apply for certificates
and to design and conduct such examinations; and,
granting and issuing to physicians certificates in Family Practice and to suspend or revoke same.
