Increasing awareness about peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is critical for the following reasons: (1)Approximately eight million people in the U.S. have PAD (many of them don't know it) and are at risk for heart attack, stroke, amputations, and problems with walking short distances. The risk of a person with PAD having a heart attack can be six times higher than normal, depending on the severity of PAD. Over 100,000 people each year in the U.S. have a leg amputated because of PAD. (2) Most patients are diagnosed with PAD only after the symptoms have become disabling. It can actually be diagnosed much earlier. Preventive measures (proper diet, smoking cessation and exercise) taken in the early stages may offset further developments. (3) New drugs and treatments are available for improved patient management.
