The Department of Allied Health Sciences prepares practitioners, scholars, teachers, and researchers in both theoretical and applied aspects of health care sciences. The term "allied health" is used to identify a cluster of health professions, encompassing as many as 100 occupational titles. Approximately two million allied health professionals are employed in the United States. Allied health professionals are involved with the delivery of health or related services pertaining to the identification, evaluation, and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutritional services; rehabilitation and health systems management, among others. Allied health professionals, to name a few, include: dental hygienists, diagnostic medical sonographers, dietitians, cytotechnologists, medical technologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, radiographers, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation psychologists, and speech-language pathologists.
